a16z Top 100 Gen AI Apps 7th Edition Churn: Seats Aren't Month-over-Month Gains

2026-10-07 · 8 min read

a16z recently published the 7th edition of Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps. When teams reopen after a break, many start there. Read against the 6th edition, the useful move is not “another Top list,” but three rulers: Web by unique monthly visits, Mobile by MAU, and Revenue by observed US consumer monthly spend. Chart footnotes roughly map the 6th to a Jan 2026 window and the 7th to ~Aug 2026.

Two filters before counting churn

  • Renames are not turnover: Freepik→Magnific, Cici→Dola, Grammarly→Superhuman, NotebookLM→Gemini Notebook—enter/exit counts below exclude those pairs.
  • From the 7th edition, NSFW-primary products are removed. The NSFW exits below read more like methodology than demand collapse.

Web · 13 real enters

Design/dev tools, private chat, clinical Q&A, and routing show up more clearly.

Web · exits · NSFW policy

Removed under the 7th-edition rule—treat as methodology, not demand zero.

Web · exits · other

Mobile · 8 real enters

Assistants, notes, and music gain weight. (Dola/Cici is a rename—excluded.)

Mobile · 8 real exits

Revenue debut: dense spend ≠ top traffic

Top 50 by observed US consumer card spend—not corporate GAAP revenue. No like-for-like 6th list, so no “exits.” Roughly 29 of 50 sit off both Web and Mobile traffic lists. Full Top 50 remains a16z’s chart.

After seats: open the September visit-gains report

a16z separates who still holds a consumer seat from who is paying. If you also need month-over-month visit gains for generator sites, use another ruler. Quiet Lion’s September 2026 AIGC visit-gains ranking sorts by net growth across music, video, image, and 3D; names such as Higgsfield, Suno, and Meshy can be checked against that month’s levels.
