Character.ai Bankruptcy: Not a Paid-Traffic Story — Migration Runs on Different Channels

2026-10-13 · 11 min read ·Teaser + PDF

On Oct 12–13, 2026, Character Technologies started a voluntary Chapter 11 sale process. The company cited legal, regulatory, and operational headwinds. Disney is the stalking-horse bidder at about $20M for a non-exclusive perpetual IP license plus transition services—not a whole-company acquisition narrative.

In September 2026, character.ai still shows ~150.9M whole-site visits (−5.5% MoM) with ~71.8% Direct and near-zero paid search. Janitorai.com sits nearby at ~132.3M with ~72.3% Direct—near twin structures. Migration demand is large, but peers do not share one acquisition machine.

Start with the verdict

Bankruptcy answers going-concern and sale mechanics. The September channel table answers whether demand still shows up and how alternatives acquire. Keep the two maps separate.

Five-site channel glance (Sep 2026, worldwide)

character.ai ~150.9M (Direct 71.8%); janitorai.com ~132.3M (Direct 72.3%); polybuzz.ai ~55.6M (organic social 12.5%); crushon.ai ~21.2M; nastia.ai ~3.3M (organic search 56.2%, +12.2% MoM—only grower). Paid search is negligible across the set.

Public reviews overlap most on long-chat memory failure; complaint axes diverge—filters for Character.ai, billing tiers for CrushOn, proxies for Janitor, ads for PolyBuzz, payments for Nastia. Switching domains does not automatically fix memory.

Disclaimer: industry research only—not a recommendation. The set includes adult-oriented chat products; judge compliance yourself. Visits are estimates, not revenue.
